Many people and organizations are using e-mail marketing to promote their products and services. However, the difference between spam and permission marketing is unfortunately not known by everyone, and it’s perfectly natural! If you are confused about why you should not pay for bulk mailing lists, continue reading this article.

Every passing day, anti-spam laws are updated and their sanctions are becoming more serious. But just looking at the subject in this way will remain infertile. Spam is a method that is already harmful to your email marketing activities, whether or not these laws exist. Now, let us dive in deeper and see what is covered by spam.

We can define spam, in the most explicit way, as commercial e-mails that are sent to you without your request. So, as long as you’re permission-based, you don’t have to worry about it. However, when you start sending to large mailing lists obtained from 3rd parties, it is nothing but spam. Now to talk a little bit about permission based e-mails, the e-mails you send to the receivers who have agreed to receive e-mails by their permission are counted as permission-based e-mail marketing activity.

So what could be the damages of spam other than the legal sanctions?

Let’s go back to the basics of email marketing. As we mentioned in the previous articles, the aim of this activity is to keep you in touch regularly with your subscribers . But when you start spamming random recipients, you’re trying to market to the audiences that carry the possibility of being interested in your product or service that is completely uncertain. And this significantly reduces the opening and clicking rates of the e-mails you send. When this rates are lower, then also the efficiency you get from your campaigns will be lower, as well. Thus, the possibility of reaching the inbox is reduced, and in addition to all this damage, you will have no gain. Also, you might even be unable to reach the recipients that are already interested in you when several users within a large mailing list report you as a spammer. We do not even mention the money and the time you spend on promoting your product or service to irrelevant people. Do you really need to destroy the highest rate of return on investment that is promised by email marketing?
